WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

Join us for a weekend of photography and fun in Italy!

Photographic workshops will be held periodically in different locations in Italy, with the aim of helping people to develop their photographic skills and visual expression. Different workshops will require different levels of ability: the basic workshop, where little knowledge is required,  and the advanced, which are aimed at serious amateurs or semi-professionals who already have the technical basics and who wish to learn how to go about creating a photoreportage, from the idea to its final presentation. Workshops include 1, 2 or 3 nights’ accommodation, and are limited to 6 or 8 participants, depending on the type of workshop, to enable maximum individual tuition.

AUTUMN in MONFERRATO

Autumn is truly the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ in the Monferrato, a beautiful, unspoilt corner of Piedmont not far from Turin where fog swirls across the valleys and around the hills, the villages and churches just visible as they pierce through the mists. It is a time of atmosphere, ever-changing light, and intense colours, as the regimented rows of vines begin to turn colour and glow in the early morning sun, and vivid sunsets create a spectacular end to the day. It is also a time of great activity, with fairs and festas celebrating the abundance of harvests – grapes, maize, rice – and truffles.

Two workshops enable you to discover the beauty of the area at this time of the year.

During each workshop you will have a chance to capture great landscapes from some panoramic vantage points, explore some of the  medieval villages (accommodation is in a group of delightful rural cottages in the heart of the hill village of Ottiglio www.lacurt.it) and the surrounding territory, meet the some of the local characters, and photograph to a theme, with the idea of creating a mini-reportage should you wish to.

SEPTEMBER WORKSHOP: (2010 dates to be confirmed)

In September we will concentrate on vines and wines as the grape harvest is in full swing. Some of Italy’s best wines come from this region and we will have a chance to photograph the vendemmia, visit a wine-cellar, and attend a local festa.

OCTOBER WORKSHOP: (2010 dates to be confirmed)

In October there are truffles, the famous white truffles of Alba. Their scent is so strong and unmistakable, it permeates the air at truffle fairs, adding to the buzz and excitement as visitors enjoy Piedmont’s ‘white gold’. During the weekend we will go out with a trifolau (truffle-hunter) and his dogs, and attend a truffle fair.

Both workshops will provide time for shooting and also post-production, and include photographic discussion and analysis, as well as good food and good wine!

WORKSHOPS INCLUDE:

-                     3 evening meals and 3 nights accommodation from Friday through to Monday am.

-                     Briefing and tuition prior to going out on location, time for review and analysis and for tuition on location.

Not included: Transport, insurance, equipment (laptop if shooting digital and tripod recommended), any extras

Price: €585 (Ł520 approx) per person (€60 supplement for single occupancy)

NOVEMBER WORKSHOP ‘Il Zogo Del Oca’, Mirano

This workshop will take place in Mirano, a small town just 10 miles from Venice. Every year Mirano celebrates the ‘Fiera dell’oca’ - the Goose Fair. The fair originally started in the early 1900s, and so the current fair recreates that atmosphere of 100 years ago. Everyone participating is dressed from that period.

The weekend is a celebration of the goose – and they are ever-present throughout the weekend. As well as stalls selling their produce there are street artists, musicians, competitions such as a goose race and the electing of Miss Goose. Sunday culminates with a real-life rendition of the board game ‘il gioco dell’oca’, the Italian equivalent of Snakes and Ladders, played out with teams and life-size pieces on a board constructed around the main square as a sort of ‘jeux sans frontičres’ – games without borders (www.giocodelloca.it).

It’s a great way to learn the basics of photoreportage, with plenty of photographic opportunities and challenges – portraits, animals, action, night shots, atmosphere.

An optional day in Venice may be added on request (min. 3 participants), to meet the challenge of creating ‘something different’ in one of the most photographed and photogenic cities in the world.
